This Government Department is responsible for delivering policies and programmes that support the Australian Community. This program provides support to individuals who have experienced hardship and need assistance through providing counselling, case management and financial support.

Your new role

The Data and Evaluation Group leads the department’s centralised data and analytic capability, with a focus on enabling business areas to use evidence to support informed decision-making. The Data Governance and Policy Section develops, refines, and implements department-wide data strategies, policies, and frameworks to ensure the safe, ethical and legal use of data.

As a senior data policy and governance officer your role is instrumental in supporting departmental staff to use data safely, securely and legally. Working autonomously, you will need to lead and manage a range of data governance activities. You will have responsibility for improving data quality, managing the protection of sensitive data and information assets, and uplifting the department’s data governance maturity. You may also have the opportunity to supervise other staff. You will be instrumental in modernising the department’s data governance program by, and not limited to:

  • Developing and promoting the department’s Data Governance Framework;
  • developing and leading critical priorities, including modernising enterprise data stewardship policies and practices, and implementing initiatives related to the department’s Data Strategy;
  • problem solving, and providing high-level governance advice to internal and external stakeholders. This includes interpreting and applying data policies, processes, or legislation;
  • developing training and communication materials to promote the uptake and use of data governance policies, processes and tools;
  • contributing to the Australian Government’s broader data sharing reform agenda through participation in various external networks and working groups; and
  • drafting briefs, reports and proposals for senior executives and key governance bodies.

As you will be engaging and collaborating with a variety of stakeholders both internally and externally, well-developed communication skills with the ability to foster professional relationships whilst building rapport and trust is a must.

What you'll need to succeed

The successful candidate will have:

  • Experience in a similar governance or policy role.
  • experience in managing multiple streams of work, competing priorities and resource capacity/constraints;
  • project management knowledge or experience (formal or informal);
  • demonstrated record of achieving results, with a focus on delivering business value and organisational outcomes; and
  • highly developed written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present ideas clearly and succinctly.

To be considered for this role you must be an Australian Citizen and have the ability to obtain and maintain a Government Security Clearance at the Baseline level or higher.
